Ignition Timing & Fuel, from the Basics

Before you edit a spark (ignition) map, you need to understand what happens inside the engine. This free lesson (about 48 minutes, explained clearly in Iraqi Arabic) covers the basics that every ignition timing and fuel change is built on.

  • Free no sign-up
  • 48 minutes
  • Arabic instruction
What you will learn
  • The four-stroke engine: intake, compression, power and exhaust, and top and bottom dead centre (TDC and BDC).
  • The ideal cycle versus the real one, and valve timing and overlap.
  • Why the spark fires before top dead centre, and how the position of peak pressure affects power.
  • Knock and self-ignition: causes such as low octane and carbon deposits, and how too much spark advance (over-advance) leads to knock.
  • Why you change the timing one degree at a time, and when to retard it to protect the engine.
  • The 14.7 air-fuel ratio (stoichiometric), and what happens when you go richer or leaner.
  • A simulation program at the end that shows how spark and fuel changes affect power and knock, in numbers and curves.

Who it is for: Workshop owners, mechanics and beginners in tuning, and anyone who wants to understand the principle before editing.

The lesson is free and plays right away: no sign-up, no payment.

Want to apply this on real files?

In the tuning courses you learn step by step on real files: editing the spark map and removing knock, building a Stage 1 tune, and removing fault codes (DTC off) the correct way. Each course is $297 instead of $497: one payment, lifetime access.

The course teaches the ECU, not the car, so check which ECU you work on:
